Two Lasers, One Goal: Easing Jaw Pain and Inflammation

Two therapeutic laser systems, both drug-free, are used in our Payson office as one part of a TMJ treatment plan. Neither cuts tissue; both deliver low-level light energy to the jaw joint and the muscles around it, with the goal of reducing inflammation and discomfort. Many patients find it helpful, though how much it helps varies from person to person.

What a treatment session looks like

A handpiece is held over the jaw joint and the surrounding muscles for a few minutes. Settings are chosen for the area being treated and your plan, and most patients feel only mild warmth or nothing at all.

MLS Laser Treatment

MLS delivers two synchronized wavelengths of light through one handpiece, treating the joint area and the surrounding muscles in the same session. It is a good fit for a flare-up, muscle spasm, or soreness after appliance therapy.

What a session involves

Best for: acute inflammation, muscle spasm, soreness after appliance therapy.

Summus Laser Treatment

Summus uses a higher-powered handpiece with adjustable settings, so we can target one spot in the joint or widen the beam to cover the muscles around it. It reaches deeper structures, which makes it useful for joint pain that has lingered for months.

What a session involves

Best for: deep joint pain, cases that need custom settings, longstanding, chronic discomfort.

Laser therapy is one tool inside a TMD treatment plan, not a stand-alone cure. At your evaluation we will tell you whether it will help your jaw. Call (385) 446-4947.

Frequently Asked Questions About MLS and Summus Laser Therapy

MLS laser therapy uses synchronized wavelengths of light with the goal of reducing inflammation and pain. It is used alongside other TMJ care for jaw discomfort, muscle soreness, and joint-related conditions, and results vary from patient to patient.

The Summus medical laser is a second therapeutic laser system with customizable settings that let us target specific areas of the jaw joint. It is used alongside, not inside, MLS treatment, depending on your case.

MLS laser treatment may be beneficial for TMJ disorders, jaw pain, facial muscle tension, arthritis, inflammation, and soft tissue injuries. It is often included as part of a comprehensive therapy plan at the TMJ and Sleep Therapy Centre of Utah.

MLS laser therapy is generally well tolerated. MLS devices are FDA-cleared, and the treatment does not require downtime. Most patients feel a soothing sensation during treatment and return to normal activities right afterward. We’ll review the risks, benefits and alternatives specific to your case at your evaluation.

The number of sessions varies depending on your condition and treatment goals. Some patients notice a change after a few visits, while others need a longer series. We reassess as we go and adjust the plan to how you respond.
